How the salary to hourly chart is worked out

Each row divides the salary by 2,080 hours, 40 a week for 52 weeks: $30,000 a year is $14.42 an hour and $50,000 is $24.04. The 37.5 hour column divides by 1,950 hours instead. The month is the salary divided by 12, a biweekly paycheck by 26 and a week by 52, each rounded to the cent only at the end. The rows come from the same code as the hourly to salary calculator, which takes any salary and your own hours and weeks; the hourly to salary chart goes the other way, from a rate of pay to a year.

Every $5,000 of salary is $2.40 an hour at 2,080 hours, so the chart climbs in even steps. The quick way of halving the salary and dropping three zeros divides by 2,000 hours and comes out about 4 percent high; federal agencies divide by 2,087 hours (OPM fact sheet), slightly lower. The guide what a salary is per hour goes through both.

Longer weeks, paid time off, overtime and after taxes

The chart assumes 40 hours. A salary covers the job rather than the hours, so a 50 hour week spreads the same pay over a quarter more time and lowers the pay per hour worked by a fifth. Paid vacation works the other way: the salary is the same, but the hours worked are fewer. On overtime, the Department of Labor's fact sheet 17A sets a salary level of $684 a week ($35,568 a year) for the executive, administrative and professional exemptions, along with tests of the job's duties; the $30,000 and $35,000 rows are under it. And every figure is gross: pay after taxes depends on your state, filing status and deductions, so it is not shown.

Questions people ask

How do you convert a salary to an hourly wage?

Divide the yearly salary by the hours it pays for. Full time is usually 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, 2,080 hours, so $50,000 a year is $24.04 an hour. If your week is 37.5 hours, divide by 1,950 instead.

Is the salary to hourly chart before or after taxes?

Before. Every figure is gross pay. Take-home pay is lower by federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, any state and local tax and your own deductions, which depend on your state and circumstances.

Why do some calculators give a different hourly figure?

They divide by a different number of hours. Halving the salary and dropping three zeros divides by 2,000, which overstates the hourly rate by 4 percent. Federal agencies divide by 2,087 hours (OPM), which gives a slightly lower rate. This chart uses 2,080, the plain 40 hour, 52 week year.

Does a salary include overtime?

Not necessarily. A salaried employee is only exempt from federal overtime if the job's duties meet the Department of Labor's tests and the salary is at least $684 a week, $35,568 a year. Each salary page says where that salary stands.
