How the hourly to salary chart is worked out
Each row multiplies the hourly rate by 2,080 hours, 40 a week for 52 weeks: $15 an hour is $31,200 a year and 20 dollars an hour is $41,600. The month is the year divided by 12, a biweekly paycheck the year divided by 26 and a week the year divided by 52, each rounded to the cent only at the end, so the columns agree with each other. The rows come from the same code as the hourly to salary calculator, which takes any rate and your own hours, weeks and days, and turns a salary back into an hourly rate.
The quick way of doubling the rate and adding three zeros counts 2,000 hours instead of 2,080 and comes out 80 times the rate short. Federal agencies divide salaries by 2,087 hours, the average working year over the calendar's 28 year cycle (OPM fact sheet), so their hourly figure is slightly lower for the same salary. The guide what a salary is per hour goes through both.
Part time, unpaid weeks, overtime and after taxes
The chart is full time with every week paid. Part time work scales in proportion to the hours: 20 hours a week is half of each figure. Weeks off without pay take a fifty-second of the year each, so two unpaid weeks cost about 3.8 percent. Overtime adds to it, at least one and a half times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek for nonexempt employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act. And every figure is gross: pay after taxes depends on your state, filing status and deductions, so it is not shown. For reference, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, $15,080 a year at 2,080 hours.

Questions people ask
How do you convert an hourly rate to a yearly salary?
Multiply the hourly rate by the hours worked in a year. Full time is usually 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, 2,080 hours, so 20 dollars an hour is 41,600 dollars a year. Fewer hours a week, or weeks off without pay, reduce the hours and the total in proportion.
Is the chart before or after taxes?
Before. Every figure is gross pay. What reaches your bank account is lower by federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, any state and local tax and your own deductions, which depend on your state and circumstances.
Why is the monthly figure not four weekly paychecks?
A year has 52 weeks but 12 months, so a month is about 4.33 weeks. The monthly column is the yearly salary divided by 12, which is more than four weeks of pay. Paid weekly or biweekly, two or three months a year bring an extra paycheck.
Does the chart include overtime?
No. Every row is 40 hours at the plain rate. Under federal law a nonexempt employee earns at least one and a half times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek, so a job with regular overtime pays more than its row shows. Each rate's page works out a 45 hour week.
