How to convert 0000 military time to standard time

Midnight is the one hour where the conversion changes the number completely. The 12-hour clock has no hour zero, so 0000 becomes 12:00 AM: the 00 turns into 12 and the minutes stay at 00. It is AM because it belongs to the start of the day, the first minute of a new date. Going the other way, 12:00 AM becomes 0000, never 2400, because 2400 marks the end of a day, not the start of one.

How to say 0000

0000 is said "zero zero hundred", and you will also hear "zero hundred" and "midnight". The hour is read as two separate zeros because every digit of a military time is spoken, and "hundred" stands in for the 00 minutes. In speech people often add the word hours, as in "zero zero hundred hours", but Army correspondence rules (AR 25-50, paragraph 1-26) say not to write the word hours after a military time.

Is 0000 morning, afternoon, evening or night?

0000 is midnight, the moment one date ends and the next begins. It is neither morning nor evening in the everyday sense, but on the clock it is the first minute of the morning: 12:00 AM, with the whole 24 hours of the day still ahead. If a deadline says "midnight on Friday", check which date is meant; NIST suggests writing 0000 for the start of a day and 2400 for its end so there is no doubt.
